Dr. Offig's Lessons From the Dark Side (Review by Julie Hamilton)

P.S. Gifford's book Dr. Offig's Lessons from The Dark Side, is a deliciously scary, page-turner for young readers and adults alike. The book is divided into 26 Lessons as told by Dr. Offig. The lessons are actually stories, and each one is equally engaging and equally terrifying, with so many unexpected twists and turns in plot, that you never know what's coming next.

The first story is about a plan two friends devise to get back at J.J., the school bully. They dare him to meet them behind a spooky crypt and he goes ahead but something eerily, thought-provoking occurs that night that will change the lives of all those involved forever.

The second story is about a doll that is given to a boy by his Magician Uncle. The toy with the painted face is much more than a toy and what happens next is truly, and unbelievably spooky

Gifford's next story takes us on one's boy suspenseful journey of what goes bump in the night. Night after night he ventures down the stairs, trying to uncover the dark secrets that exist in the shadows and in the mysterious sounds of his home after dark. This story is one I'm sure most of us can relate to because we have at one time or another, wondered about the ghostly activities that go on after the midnight hour in our very own homes.

The fourth story is my personal favorite because it slowly builds up to the anticipation of its climax. It takes place in a stately old house, and within the walls of this house occurs a story that is disturbing and haunting. We are told from the beginning of this story that “youth fades quicker than you realize.” Gifford plays with the nuances of language and delivers to us a thrilling story.

The remainder of P.S. Gifford's stories entertain us, indulge us and scare us in the same tradition as the first four stories. They embody elements of mystery, horror and magic as in the case of the final story. An aging scientist drinks a magic potion and the outcome is quite surprising. Is it an experiment gone sour? Quite the opposite. This is an extraordinary science experiment, and a lesson on what is more than meets the eye...

P.S. Gifford's, book, Dr. Offig, is not a modern-day medley of trash and gore. It is spooky, spell-binding, and simply sensational!
