| Shadows by Joan De La Haye (Review by Kerri Silva) |

“Shadows” by Joan De La Haye is a frightening story of two people’s seemingly unrelated descent into madness. This is a book that refuses to be put down.
Sarah is an average woman dealing with tragedy. She tries to deal with it on her own, but she seems to be going through a psychotic break. She has all the makings of the classic damsel in distress, but she has a surprising stubborn streak that makes her interesting. She even nicknames her tormentor Jack. She feels so much like a real person that the beginning of the story seems too familiar. But what makes her story even more frightening is her spiral into insanity.
Jack is a confusing character. At times, he seems to care about Sarah and yet he also enjoys causing her pain. He has a twisted sense of humor that usually includes visions of death and decomposition. He is the most mysterious character in the book and the most enjoyable to read about.
Sarah’s stay at the mental institution brought on by her hallucinations and eventual catatonia is a horrific one, made so by its complete possibility without any supernatural horror to make it less. From painful treatments that seem to originate from the dark ages to an unethical sadistic doctor, it emphasizes her vulnerability to authority figures and forges her stubborn streak even more.
This was an intriguing book. Sarah’s descent into madness was horrifying and makes the reader question his or her own sanity in contemplating what is real and what is not. Readers will find this book a non-stop read.
